The New York Underwater Photographic Society
NYUPS is a community for anyone interested in underwater photography or video. We have regular meetings in New York City, sometimes featuring world renowned guests like David Doubilet, Amos Nachoum, Howard Schatz or Emory Kristof. Other times we just meet to share our own work on a specific theme.
Our goal is to promote the art of underwater imaging, and to help our members improve their skills through sharing and discussing their photos and videos. Our meetings are for all levels - it doesn’t matter what equipment you use or how long you've been shooting. Also, you do NOT need to submit material to attend the meetings – feel free to just come and enjoy the presentations, learn from the discussion and make your own comments.
You can be notified about our meetings by joining the Big Apple Divers - our announcements and calls for submissions are sent to the whole club. If you prefer, you can also just email us at photos@bigappledivers.com, and we will add your name to the distribution list.
Here are some of the images which were submitted by our members to the last meeting, the theme of which was "It Takes Two". Click on the controls to page through the gallery. You can also see submissions from our most recent and and other past meetings on our Facebook and Instagram accounts.

Upcoming Meeting
The NYUPS is closely affiliated with the Big Apple Divers, but not everyone who attends our meetings is also a member of the club. We announce our meetings and send out a call for submissions through the BAD mailing list, and it is also at the bottom of this page. If you would like to receive these notifications without joining the club, let us know by emailing photos@bigappledivers.com and we will add you to a separate mailing list.
For the March 10th, 2026 meeting, the theme is BLACK AND WHITE. Show us your striking compositions and beautiful detail in shades of gray.
Once again, these meetings are for photographers and videographers to share and discuss their favorite images and videos. And our meetings are for all levels - it doesn’t matter what camera you use or how long you've been shooting, We just want to share the joys of underwater imaging. Also, you do NOT need to submit material to attend the meeting – feel free to just come and enjoy the photos and video, learn from the discussion and make your own comments. We plan on including some live editing as well, so that people can see the sort of work that can be done with modern image processing software.
We do want to stress that the point of these meetings is to explore the techniques used in creating the images. This way the submitter can benefit from feedback and the audience can learn about the process. Please do not expect to just to show images without knowing the technical details of your shots, or without being prepared to speak about your process and participate in the discussion. This is not meant to be a showcase for your work, but rather an interactive experience about how we can all improve our skills..
While each person can submit up to ten photos we may not show all of them if we get a large number of submissions. Therefore, please number your images and place any that you most want to see presented earlier in the list. Videos are also welcome, up to four minutes in length or two videos no longer than two minutes each.
IMAGE SPECS:
All images should be .JPG files, no larger than 2.5 MB each. If you would like to submit videos, please share them with us using Dropbox or another similar online service. Please email your images or video links - with the subject line “NYUPS SUBMISSION” - to Mike Rothschild at photos@bigappledivers.com
You will receive a confirmation of the receipt of your images. If you don’t, please contact Mike directly (doctormike@kidsent.com). The deadline for image submission is Tuesday, March 3rd.
The NYUPS reserves the right to share all submitted material (with appropriate attribution) on our social media pages, our web site and elsewhere, including the monthly meetings of the Big Apple Divers.
